Sam's Story

Losing a child to addiction is indescribable, especially when your own struggles intertwine. This was my journey with my daughter, Samantha Johnson, born October 6th, 2000, and lost to a drug overdose on March 15th, 2021.

Samantha’s life was full of beauty, from her birth to cherished moments in Clarens, where laughter and joy mixed with the sorrow of her addiction. Her loving heart and warrior spirit, even in the darkest times, continue to echo in my memories.

The week preceding Samantha's passing became a testament to divine control, as God intervened during my hospitalization for a burst appendix. Despite being physically constrained, I felt Jesus' presence and prayed for strength. Yet, on March 15th, the irreplaceable void left by Samantha's departure pierced me with indescribable pain.

In my grief, I had a choice—to be consumed by anger or submit to God. I chose the latter, holding onto the promises I made in the hospital. In spite of the loss, I found purpose in creating SAM’S VOICE, a sanctuary for recovering addicts to rediscover themselves in a clean, safe environment.

Each day, I lived for God, navigating a journey of mourning, prayer, and faith. SAM’S VOICE became my heartfelt mission, a beacon of hope and transformation for those in recovery. SAM’S VOICE stands as a tribute to my daughter’s memory, born from loss and driven by a deep desire to help others find healing and hope.

Restoration

Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Reflecting on the past 32 months, I am awestruck by the grace and mercy bestowed upon me by God. Sam's Voice is gaining strength, I married a wonderful man named Nicholas Kruyshaar in January 2023.

Nicholas and I share a common history of drug addiction, having experienced the challenges firsthand. We've not only talked the talk but walked the walk of addiction. His remarkable love and dedication to helping addicts are truly commendable, as he serves as our on-site addiction counsellor.

In Nicholas, I found not just a husband but my closest companion, collaborator, and Sam's Voice advocate. Together, we strive to create a brighter future for those in recovery, aspiring to amplify Sam's Voice even further.

I've witnessed numerous families, including my own with my daughter Mary-Jane, being restored through God's grace. The boundless presence of God's love, grace, and mercy continues to shape and restore my life.

Together saving one more soul for Jesus.|
